Carolyn Sparrey, PhD, PEng (EGBC)

Scientific Director

Carolyn Sparrey is the Scientific Director of ImageTech, an Associate Professor in the School of Mechatronic Systems Engineering at SFU and a Principal Investigator at the International Collaboration on Repair Discoveries (ICORD) in Vancouver, Canada. Her research focus is on applying mechanical engineering principles to understanding, diagnosing, preventing and treating spinal cord injuries. Prof. Sparrey is passionate about using health technology research to improve patient care.

Maggie Clarke, PhD

Maggie joined ImageTech In April of 2022. She received her BSc in neuroscience from Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and subsequently worked in neuroimaging research at the Lab for Clinical MEG at the Biomedical Translational Imaging Centre (BIOTIC). Maggie then completed her PhD at the University of Washington and worked as a research scientist at the Institute for Learning and Brain Sciences (I-Labs) in Seattle, Washington. There, she was involved in a number of neuroimaging projects surrounding early brain development of infants and young children. Her research focuses on magnetoencephalography (MEG) method development and validation as well as studying the cortical networks involved in language development.

Marcin Jankiewicz, PhD

Associate Director, Head of MRI program

Marcin Jankiewicz joined SFU in February of 2022. Dr. Jankiewicz earned his PhD in theoretical physics at Vanderbilt University, Nashville, TN. He did his postdoctoral training at the Vanderbilt University Institute of Imaging Science. He then moved to Cape Town, South Africa where as a research officer at University of Cape Town (UCT) was a manager and MR physicist at Cape Universities Brain Imaging Centre hosted at Tygerberg Hospital, Stellenbosch University. Later on, as a senior research officer (UCT) he was MR physicist at Cape Universities Body Imaging Centre at Groote Schuur Hospital, University of Cape Town. As a researcher, he was involved in multiple studies related to HIV, fetal alcohol spectrum disorder and brain development. His research interests involve basic MR physics, design and implementation of multimodal studies, with a special interest in structural and functional connectivity. At ImageTech Lab, he is responsible for the research component of the MRI program at SFU.

Erin Macmillan

Erin MacMillan, PhD

Philips MR Clinical Scientist

Erin is a Philips MR Clinical Scientist based in the Lower Mainland. She supports research on the Philips MRI systems at both the UBC MRI Research Centre and the SFU ImageTech Lab. Erin also acts as a liaison within and between the research sites and Philips, helps to connect researchers with resources available through Philips, collaborates on a wide range of projects, and pursues her own technical development projects in MR spectroscopy and myelin water imaging.

Junaid Lalani, RTR, RTMR

Operations Director

Junaid has 15 years of Medical Imaging experience with 14 years in clinical MRI practice managing the largest and busiest MRI department in Western Canada. He joined the SFU ImageTech Lab team in 2021 and has enjoyed the transition into research operations. He is responsible for the staff and the daily operations of the lab.

Katherine Kwan, RTMR

MR Technologist

Katherine joined ImageTech in 2021 from the Diagnostic Accreditation Program with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of BC. She has a special interest in quality improvement and implementing evidence-based best practices. Aside from MRI, she has worked in the acute care setting for CT and Radiology.

Samuel Yu

Samuel Yu, RTMR

MR Technologist

Samuel has worked in clinical imaging setting since 2012 and has 5 years of MRI experience along with clinical protocol development and implementation. He has worked with 1.5 and 3T MRI scanners across different vendors.
